Just keep floating

Don't let your thoughts pull you down

Often, it feels easier to let those negative thoughts engulf your mind, let yourself believe that you are not as good as you think you are, not pretty enough, not talented enough, not hardworking enough, that you are not worth it. It's easier to believe these thoughts, to cry yourself to sleep, and not try again.

It takes much more strength to keep going, much more courage to rise beyond the odds, and to work hard for your goals. You don't have control over what happens in your life, but you can control how you deal with it. Your emotions may root from external factors but are propagated by your own mindset.

Like our lives, a ship must weather the storms of the sea, the tumultuous waves that threaten to engulf it. But it is not the storm that causes the ship's demise, it is the ingress of water, the small leaks that, over time, fill the hold and weigh it down.

Similarly, in life, it is not the negativity of the world that renders us powerless but our own susceptibility to its influence. The small doubts, the small fears, the small insecurities that, over time, fill our minds and weigh us down.

But, like the ship, we too have the power to resist negative influences and maintain a positive outlook.

Learn to find beauty amid chaos, to see the silver lining in every cloud, and to hear the music in the midst of the storm. Remember that we are the captain of our ship, steering its way through the highs and lows of the sea (aka life), be ever vigilant, and ever ready to weather the storms that come your way.

Out of everything that isn't in your control, don't let negativity be your undoing.

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.

William James, American philosopher and psychologist.

Several strategies can help you overcome negative thoughts:

  1. Reframe negative thoughts: Try to identify the specific thought that is causing you distress, and then challenge its validity by asking yourself if there is evidence to support it. Once you have challenged the thought, try to reframe it in a more positive light.

  2. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, making it easier to identify and challenge negative thoughts.

  3. Engage in physical activity: Regular exercise can help reduce stress and improve mood, which can make it easier to cope with negative thoughts.

  4. Connect with others: Talking to friends, family, or a therapist can help you process negative thoughts and feelings and gain a new perspective.

  5. Prioritize self-care: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and engage in activities you enjoy. Taking care of yourself can help improve your mood and reduce negative thoughts.

  6. Find a hobby that engrosses you: it's not the best suggestion, but you can't overthink when you are busy, find a hobby that you enjoy and also keeps you busy.

Remember, it’s essential to be patient and kind to yourself as you work to overcome negative thoughts. It can take time and effort to change patterns of thinking, but with persistence, you can learn to manage and overcome them.
