From Hot Showers to Global Crises

Navigating Uncertainty in the Modern Age

Times have been a-changing and it might feel overwhelming for some of us.

Us the overthinkers.

We who worry day in and day out.

We who live in constant ‘impending’ anxiety.

All of us who just wanted to live a simpler life. A little less drama than usual. I don’t want to be a person who isn’t grateful for the things they have. I appreciate the times I grew up in. Let me explain.

One of the things I truly love is a long, hot shower. You can even say I’m a simp for hot showers (*Manifesting hot showers on cold mornings*). But come to think about it, hot showers are relatively such a new invention.

People have been taking hot showers for less than 100 years, maybe even less than that. I know for us it counts as the smallest of things, but the idea of having a controlled ‘rain’ with the ideal temperature adjusted to your comfort is a big deal. Arguably the era the millennials and GenZ grew up in was one of the most peaceful times in human history. But we did not know what was coming.

Past few years have been tough for all of us. Nobody needs to be reminded of COVID times, a lot of us lost a friend, a family member, or a close acquaintance. But as we developed the vaccine we thought the worst was behind us for sure. Things started to look up, and although things weren’t completely back to normal, they started to resemble a little bit.

The resemblance is funny because as you tend to stick to observing similarities, you forget to see how much is different.

Things changed a lot post-COVID around the world. But as we were adapting to the changes, another danger started to loom on us.

We saw wars escalating from the Taliban taking over the entire country of Afghanistan to the impending doom of WW3 in Ukraine and Russia. I remember the initial days when Russia invaded Ukraine and the frightening sights of human destruction at a large scale.

With the sheltered environment we grew up in, it’s easier to get frightened by everything. It’s easy to ask the question,

Why Me? Why do I have to go through all this? I just wanted to live the best years of my life enjoying peacefully.’

All the uncertainties around the economy and changing world order might feel like a burden. That’s when I refer to my all-time favorite LOTR quote:

This quote may seem cliche, but it holds a powerful truth. As overwhelming as the world's problems may seem, we can all make a difference in our own way. We may not be able to solve global conflicts or eradicate a pandemic, but we can impact our community and those around us.

In times of uncertainty, it's important to focus on what we can control.

We can take care of our physical and mental health, support local businesses, donate to charities, and educate ourselves on important issues.

It's easy to feel powerless in the face of global events, but we must remember that change often starts at the grassroots level.

Finally, we must remember that uncertainty is a part of life. As much as we may desire stability and predictability, life is full of surprises. We must learn to adapt and be resilient in the face of change. This doesn't mean we should accept injustice or inaction, but rather we should approach uncertainty with a growth mindset.

Remember, even the smallest person can change the course of history.
